Another Grand Slam, another history-making moment for Novak Djokovic.
The Serbian notched his 24th major title Sunday at the US Open by downing Daniil Medvedev in straight sets on Arthur Ashe Stadium. In the process, Djokovic tied Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam singles trophies in history.
“I had the childhood dream when I was seven, eight,” Djokovic said after his 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 final triumph. “I wanted to become the best player in the world and win the Wimbledon trophy. That was the only thing I wanted. But then when I realised that, obviously I started to dream new dreams and set new objectives, new goals. I never imagined that I would be here standing with you talking about 24 Slams.”
Novak Djokovic achieved an impressive milestone by clinching his 23rd major championship
Even at 36 years of age, Djokovic continues to defy his younger rivals on the biggest stages in tennis. He has finished 2023 with a 27-1 record at the majors, with his only disappointment his Wimbledon final loss against Carlos Alcaraz.
“Twenty-four. I feel like I have not had a bad career and I have 20 titles,” said Medvedev to Djokovic. “You have 24 Grand Slams. Wow.”
Djokovic secured his fourth US Open crown and also gained the upper hand in his battle for ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by Pepperstone with Alcaraz. He now leads the Spaniard by 770 points, while third-placed Medvedev trails Djokovic by 2,355 points.
