Jannik Sinner’s first defeat of the 2024 season proved to be nothing but a minor blip.
“I just try to improve,” said Sinner when asked about the key to his success so far this year. “Also enjoying the moment. This is a special moment. You never know if this is the last time or not. So you have to enjoy this for one day.”
After falling to Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells semi-finals, Sinner responded in spectacular fashion at the Miami Open presented by Itau. The 22-year-old dropped just one set across his six matches in Florida, where he sealed the trophy with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 triumph against Grigor Dimitrov in the championship match.
“Being No. 2, it’s an amazing feeling,” said Sinner, who is 22-1 for the year, in his post-match press conference. “I never thought I would come to this point. I come from a very normal family. My dad is still working. My mum, too. For me sport is one thing, and life is different. I’m very happy to be in this position. I’m just enjoying every moment.”
With his second ATP Masters 1000 crown, Sinner also leapfrogged his rival Alcaraz to reach a career-high No. 2 in the PIF ATP Rankings. The 22-year-old may currently appear to have the tennis world at his feet, but he is not likely to let his rise change him.
