American Express’ Comprehensive Support for Women Making an Impact Both On and Off the Field

American Express has been a long-time proponent of women’s sports, athletes and the many organizations that support them. And, while the spotlight is finally shining bright on women’s athletics around the world, we’re proud to say our backing predates this current fever pitch.

From 14 years of unforgettable games and experiences with our WNBA partnership to our new sponsorship of the F1 ACADEMY™, Amex has been a staunch supporter of leagues, teams, athletes, tournaments and non-profits that make women’s sports an exciting and vibrant community. We are also teaming up with the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF), a nonprofit organization that champions the entire women’s sports ecosystem. WSF has been changing the game for 50 years through its research, advocacy and community programming, investing more than $100 million to help girls and women play, compete and lead – in sports and beyond.

Here are a few ways we’ve shown up for women athletes this year in communities around the world:

WNBA

2024 All-Star Game

One of the hottest weekends in women’s basketball dropped into Phoenix, bringing with it an all-star lineup of triple-degree temperatures, unforgettable experiences and the biggest names in the league to face off for the 2024 AT&T WNBA All-Star Game. The league celebrated its 20th All-Star competition which tipped-off on Saturday, July 20 at Footprint Center. And once again, American Express and the WNBA teamed up to give Card Members and fans the ultimate All-Star experience. Amex’s collaboration with the WNBA dates to 2010 and has grown significantly, creating a deep partnership built on fan and customer engagement and growth through media efforts, player partnerships, a partnership with the New York Liberty, and event activations like the Amex Experience at the 2024 AT&T WNBA All-Star.

Card Members and their guests got the chance to hear from players Kahleah Copper and Aliyah Boston during two intimate fireside chats at the Amex Experience, which was followed by an opportunity to meet the athletes. While the discussions covered many topics, the importance of uplifting women in sports was a focal point.

From tip-off to the final buzzer of the season, American Express is a proud partner of the New York Liberty. The start of the 2023 WNBA season kicked off our partnership with the Liberty, who play their home games at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. And even before this partnership, Card Members enjoyed home court advantage at Barclays, where they can access exclusive benefits or perks, including a dedicated Card Member entrance, Amex Shop, and 10% discount on concessions when you notify the concessionaire that you’re paying with your Amex Card. Brighton & Hove Albion Women Football Club

For the Brighton & Hove Albion Women’s Football team, American Express shows up in many ways. We are the English team’s main club sponsor with our name displayed prominently across their jerseys, serving as shirt sponsors since 2013. We provide Card Members access and perks, such as a 10% discount on eligible food, drink, and retail purchases when they notify the cashier that they are paying with their Amex Card at the American Express Stadium. And for the past nine years, we have partnered with the Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation to sponsor free football sessions to encourage more girls to participate in the sport. Local schools help guide students towards this opportunity to try something new, demonstrating that everyone can feel welcome in football.

U.S. Women’s Open Golf Championship

The U.S. Women’s Open is the oldest of the five Major Championships in women’s golf and one of Amex’s longtime sporting partnerships. In June, we brought our powerful backing of small businesses to the 79th U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. For the third year in a row, Amex partnered with players in the field to sport the logos of local small businesses on their gear. This year, three players represented Nicole Taylor Boutique, Savoy Truffle and Lancaster Beignet Company. At the Amex® Fan Stop, these players surprised and delighted Card Members and fans who stopped through to pick up complimentary giveaways, including a golf-inspired friendship bracelet from Nicole Taylor Boutique.

F1 ACADEMY™

This spring, American Express revved up a new global partnership with all-female racing series F1 ACADEMY™, figuratively placing woman-owned small businesses in the driver seat. As part of the partnership that kicked off during Miami Race Week, American Express is spotlighting six woman-owned small businesses in the cities that host F1 ACADEMY™ races throughout the 2024 season, featuring their logo on the custom Amex livery.

Housed in the heart of the Gothic Quarter in the Old Town of Barcelona and currently owned and led by by María Jesús Lores Baldellou, this chocolate shop has been delighting sweet tooths since the 1820s.
