Seattle Seahawks “Dark Side” defense help seal Super Bowl LX victory over New England Patriots

Santa Clara, CA – Defense secures championships. The Seattle Seahawks demonstrated their strength conclusively.

The Seahawks defeated the Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl LX, earning their second Super Bowl championship in franchise history.

Sam Darnold successfully completed a touchdown pass to AJ Barner, Kenneth Walker III accumulated 135 rushing yards, and Jason Myers set a Super Bowl record by converting all five of his field-goal attempts.

“We have so many weapons; I thought we were going to spread the ball around,” Walker said. “I just want to make the best impact on my team any way I can.”

Walker became the first running back to earn the Super Bowl MVP award since Hall of Famer Terrell Davis achieved this with Denver 28 years ago.

“You go through a lot of adversity in life and in football,” Walker added. “This year we had a lot of ups and downs but as a team we stuck together. That brother hood, I would not be here if it was not for those guys.”

The Seahawks concluded their season with a ten-game winning streak, including the playoffs.

“The reason why I am here is because of my journey. Because of the ups and downs especially the downs I went through early in my career,” Darnold said. “I learn so much about myself, about football. It is funny on how things work, but that is life.”

The Seahawks committed zero turnovers in this postseason, the fewest recorded by a Super Bowl champion.

“I am going to continue to keep working,” Darnold added. “The journey and everything that comes with it being able to win a super bowl hasn’t really suck in yet, even just saying it out loud was an awesome moment I was able to share tonight with my teammates and coaches.”

Darnold completed 19 of 38 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown.

Returning to the Seahawks’ defensive unit.

Devon Witherspoon, Derick Hall, Byron Murphy, and the rest of Mike MacDonald’s aggressive defense challenged Drake Maye aggressively.

“It’s a magical time. I am really proud,” MacDonald said.

Uchenna Nwosu demonstrated a strong defensive effort by intercepting Maye’s pass after Witherspoon deflected it, returning it 45 yards for a touchdown.

That sealed the Seahawks second Super Bowl championship.

Macdonald is the third youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl at the age of 38 years and 227 days.

“We had some pressures with Spoon in the game plan, we felt like there were some opportunities in some of the longer down and distances and he made them come to life,” MacDonald added. “Sometimes it is not how you draw it up, the players have to go make plays and that’s what he did. He played a dynamite game. I am happy for him; he is such a great player. He is the lifeblood of our football team.”

Witherspoon recorded four tackles, one sack, and three quarterback hits.

The Patriots did not score in the first half. This marks the 15th time in Super Bowl history that a team has been scoreless in the first half, with the previous 14 teams ultimately losing the game.

“You can feel how our guys was playing, that was really cool. Our coaches put together a really good game plan. Our players prepared their tales off. They play with anticipation,” MacDonald added. “They played within their rules. They play our style of football. Once we got to halftime we knew we would be in good shape. But you also knew new England would have a couple of answers. We stuck to our process and said lets take one play at a time, make these adjustments and go try to win a football game.

Macdonald is the sixth head coach in the past 40 years to win a Super Bowl within their first two seasons in the position.

Seahawks trailed for 95 seconds this postseason.

Maye was sacked six times, tying his career high for the most in a single game.

“We have great people all round that help us support staff and great fan base,” Maye said. “I am glad to have this uniform on. Looking forward to getting back and play another one.”

The Patriots are the first team to field multiple rookie offensive linemen in a Super Bowl.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is the eighth head coach to reach the Super Bowl in their first season with a team.

“We had a really good year,” Vrabel said. “One that I am proud of. This game is not a reflection of our year. We lost, we were beat, out coached and outplayed. Give them credit.”

The Patriots completed this season with a record of 17 wins and 4 losses, including the playoffs (8-26 during the 2023-24 season).

In order for the Patriots to return to the Super Bowl, improvements are needed along the offensive line. Additionally, increasing offensive weapons would enhance their prospects. Defensively, the team played sufficiently well for much of the game to secure a win. As offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, it’s important to consider how to improve the quarterback’s performance. Maye appeared tentative throughout the game. Although he is an athletic quarterback and their offense should capitalize on his mobility, his passing was inconsistent—throws were often behind receivers or low, and he seemed unable to settle into a rhythm.

Some critics have questioned whether Maye benefited from the schedule they faced this season, and this game may reinforce those doubts. The talent disparity between Seattle and New England was significant in this matchup, and if the Patriots aim to compete at a higher level, addressing this talent gap is essential.
