The Chicago Sky lost to the Phoenix Mercury inside Footprint Center on Sunday, Aug. 18. The Sky fall to 11-16 on the season, 7-7 on the road, 6-7 against the Western Conference, 0-2 against Phoenix this season and 18-27 against the Mercury all time.
Angel Reese had a career game, notching a career-high 20 rebounds to go along with 19 points. Her 20 rebounds are tied for the most by a player this season (Las Vegas’s A’ja Wilson recorded 20 against Seattle on July 10) and tonight’s game marks Reese’s first 20-rebound game. She also recorded a career-high 10 offensive rebounds, the most in a game by any player this season.
Reese passed Candace Parker (313 rebounds in rookie season) for sixth on the WNBA’s all-time rookie rebounds list.
Reese also passed Breanna Stewart (317 rebounds in rookie season) for fifth on the rookie rebounds list.
Chennedy Carter tied her season high in assists with six to go along with 16 points and six rebounds. Isabelle Harrison recorded 12 points and six rebounds off the bench while Kamilla Cardoso recorded 12 points in 16 minutes.
Diana Taurasi led the Mercury in scoring with 23 points, making all nine of her free-throw attempts. Brittney Griner notched 18 points while Sophie Cunningham had the first double-double of her career, with 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Monique Billings recorded 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench in her Mercury debut.
The Sky travel again on August 23 to take on the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Sky are 0-2 this season against the Sun after playing them twice at home. Chicago is also 32-35 against Connecticut all time.
In the first matchup between the two teams on May 25, the Sky lost 82-86. The Sky had five players score in double figures, with Angel Reese and Dana Evans going for 13 points apiece. DeWanna Bonner led Connecticut in scoring with 19 points.
Reese recorded her first career 20-point game in the second game between Chicago and Connecticut on June 12. Kamilla Cardoso and Chennedy Carter scored 10 points each. Alyssa Thomas stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and six steals.
