Estela Perez-Somarriba Ranked First Nationally

CORAL GABLES, FL.Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team has advanced one position in the Oracle/ITA rankings and is now recognized as the top singles player nationally, as announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The junior had been ranked second in the nation in each of the previous six releases and has now surpassed Georgia’s Katarina Jokic by 0.07 points to attain the top spot.

This marks the first time since 2007 that a Hurricane has been ranked at the top of the singles list, with Audra Cohen holding that position. Perez-Somarriba recently earned her second consecutive ACC Player of the Year award, making her the eighth player in ACC history to achieve this distinction.

In addition to Perez-Somarriba’s rise in the singles rankings, Miami’s doubles team of freshman Daevenia Achong and senior Daniella Roldan has continued to improve. They are now ranked No. 13 nationally, their highest ranking of the season, and it is the first time since 2016 that a Miami duo has held this top spot. Achong and Roldan were also announced as selections for the NCAA Doubles Championship on Tuesday night.

Furthermore, Miami maintained its position at No. 19 in the rankings after a week without competition, in preparation for the upcoming NCAA Team Championship.

The Hurricanes are one of six Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) teams ranked in the top 25, including No. 1 North Carolina, No. 5 Duke, No. 11 Florida State, No. 12 NC State, No. 21 Virginia, and No. 22 Wake Forest. Additional ACC teams ranked are Syracuse at No. 31, Georgia Tech at No. 41, Boston College at No. 42, and Notre Dame at No. 46, bringing the total number of ACC teams in the top 50 to eleven.
