The Dolphins make me cry, Philadelphia Eagles acquire Jaelan Phillips through trade with the Miami Dolphins

MIAMI GARDENS, FL. – The Miami Dolphins announced today that they have agreed to terms on a trade with Philadelphia to acquire a 2026 third-round selection in exchange for linebacker Jaelan Phillips, pending a physical.

The Philadelphia Eagles will cover Phillips’ $1.5 million salary for the remainder of the season. Additionally, the Miami Dolphins converted $5.1255 million of his remaining base salary into a signing bonus.

Phillips has recorded three sacks over nine games this season and totals 26 sacks across his five-year tenure with Miami. The 2021 first-round draft pick is expected to become a free agent following the conclusion of this season.

The defending Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles made additional efforts to strengthen their defense last week by acquiring cornerbacks Michael Carter II and Jaire Alexander through separate trades. Currently, the team’s defense ranks 23rd in the NFL in total defense and 24th in sacks.

In Philadelphia, Phillips will have the opportunity to reunite with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who served as the defensive coordinator in Miami in 2023. During that season, Phillips recorded 6.5 sacks in just eight games.

Phillips has played in 55 career games with 38 starts during five seasons (2021-25) with Miami, totaling 177 tackles (105 solo), 26.0 sacks, one interception, seven passes defensed, one forced fumble and four fumble recoveries. He entered the league as a first-round selection (18th overall) by the Dolphins in the 2021 NFL Draft. Phillips finished his collegiate career at the University of Miami, where he started 10 games and totaled 45 tackles (21 solo), 8.0 sacks, 15.5 tackles for loss, four passes defensed and one interception in 2020 after transferring from UCLA.
