Appalachian State Mountaineers linebacker Trey Cobb named the Sun Belt Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week

BOONE, N.C. — App State linebacker Trey Cobb has been named the Sun Belt Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week following a strong performance for the first-place Mountaineers in a league win against ULM. Cobb made 12 tackles, recorded an interception, recovered a fumble and had a key fourth-down stop as App State built a 49-7 halftime lead in a 59-28 victory. The fumble recovery, interception and fourth-down tackle inside the App State 30 ended ULM’s second, third and fourth possessions, helping the Mountaineers establish a 28-0 lead only a few minutes into the second quarter.

Cobb had a hand in two of the five turnovers forced by App State’s defense. A week after ULM’s Chandler Rogers threw for 369 yards with four touchdowns and was named the Sun Belt’s Offensive Player of the Week, the Mountaineers limited him to 3 yards with two completions and one interception on five attempts before he was replaced.Cobb ranks second on this year’s team with 43 tackles, as he’s also posted four pass breakups, two tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry. A senior from Waycross, Ga., he’ll enter this weekend’s game at Arkansas State with 196 career tackles.Elsewhere, College Sports Madness named quarterback Chase Brice the Sun Belt’s Offensive Player of the Week. He went 20 of 30 for 256 yards overall and threw four touchdown passes in the first half alone.
