Chicago Sky back to two game losing streak after loss to Connecticut Sun

The Chicago Sky fell to the Connecticut Sun in their second matchup of the season at Wintrust Arena on Wednesday, June 12. With the loss, the Sky moved to 4-7 on the season, 2-4 against the Eastern Conference, 1-5 at home, 1-4 in Commissioner’s Cup games and 32-35 against the Sun all time.

Angel Reese led the way for the Sky, scoring a career-high 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double this season. Kamilla Cardoso, Marina Mabrey and Chennedy Carter scored 10 points apiece while Diamond DeShields and Isabelle Harrison scored nine each.

With Reese going for 20 points and 10 rebounds and Cardoso going for 10 points and nine rebounds, the duo became the first rookie pair to each have 10+ points and 9+ rebounds in the same game since Chiney Ogwumike and Alyssa Thomas both did so for the Sun in 2014 (Across the Timeline).

Reese is the fourth first-year player in league history to have 13+ points and 10+ rebounds in four consecutive games, joining Yolanda Griffith, Tamika Catchings and Tina Charles (Across the Timeline).

Connecticut benefitted from a balanced offensive attack, with four players scoring 13+ points. Alyssa Thomas led the way with 20 points to go along with seven rebounds and a season-high six steals, Brionna Jones scored 18 points, DeWanna Bonner recorded 16 points and eight rebounds, and Tyasha Harris scored 13 points including two three-pointers.

Thomas recorded the 15th 20/7/6/4 game in WNBA history; she’s the fifth player with multiple such games (Across the Timeline).

DeWanna Bonner tied Tully Bevilaqua (573 career steals) for 12th on the WNBA’s all-time steals list.

The Sky take on the Washington Mystics on Friday, June 14 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, D.C. The Mystics are 1-12 after logging their first win of the season on Tuesday against the Atlanta Dream. The Sky are 34-34 against the Mystics all-time after beating them earlier this season in Washington.

The Mystics are led in scoring by two-time All-Star Ariel Atkins this season, as the seven-year WNBA veteran is averaging 13.5 points and 1.8 steals on 32.0 minutes per game, all three of those being team highs. Julie Vanloo leads the team in assists per game (5.5) and Shakira Austin leads in rebounds per game (6.8). Austin’s 11.7 points per game rank second on the team and Brittney Sykes rounds out Washington’s double-digit scorers with 11.3 points per game.

This is the second matchup between Chicago and Washington this season. The Sky beat the Mystics 79-71 in Washington on Thursday, June 6. Chennedy Carter led all scorers with 25 points on 10 of 17 (58.8%) shooting, along with four assists and two rebounds off the bench. Angel Reese recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Isabelle Harrison had her best game in a Chicago uniform against Washington, recording 14 points and seven rebounds with 10 of her points coming in the third quarter.

Aaliyah Edwards led the Mystics in scoring with a career-high 23 points on 10 of 12 (83.3%) shooting from the floor and a career-high 14 rebounds, while Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (11 points) and Ariel Atkins (10 points) also scored in double figures. Julie Vanloo led all players with seven assists to go along with her six points.
