Chicago Sky conclude road trip with defeat against Seattle Storm

The Chicago Sky fell to the Seattle Storm 71-84 inside Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday, July 7 to close out a three-game road trip. The Sky finished the road trip 2-1 and are now 8-12 on the season, 5-5 on the road and 4-5 against the Western Conference. Sunday’s matchup marked the final game between the Sky and the Storm this season, with the Sky going 1-2 against them this season to move to 21-26 against Seattle all time.

Chennedy Carter led the Sky in scoring for the fourth straight game, recording 21 points. Marina Mabrey recorded 14 points, five rebounds and six assists while Isabelle Harrison scored 11 points.

Angel Reese recorded her 13th straight double-double, finishing with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Her 13 straight double-doubles are the most consecutive double-doubles by any player spanning any stretch of time in WNBA history. She broke Candace Parker’s previous record of 12, which spanned the 2009-10 seasons. She also recorded four steals.

Reese passed Glory Johnson (95 offensive rebounds in rookie season) for 10th on the WNBA’s rookie offensive rebounds list.

Reese then passed Tamika Raymond (96) for ninth on WNBA’s rookie offensive rebounds list with 97 after Sunday’s game.

Reese is now third on the Sky’s single season offensive rebounds list with 97. She is behind only Sylvia Fowles’ 2011 season (100) and 2013 season (117).

Nneka Ogwumike led the Storm in scoring with a 24-point, 13-rebound double-double. Her 13 rebounds were a season high. Ezi Magbegor also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jewell Loyd scored 20 points and Skylar Diggins-Smith scored 15 to round out Seattle’s double-figure scorers.

Diggins-Smith passed Temeka Jonhson (1,382 career assists) for 15th on the WNBA’s all-time assists list with 1,386 career assists after Sunday’s game.

Diggins-Smith reached 4,500 career points, becoming the 34th player in WNBA history to do so (Storm PR).

Jewell Loyd passed Becky Hammon (1,182 career free throws) for 19th on the WNBA’s all-time free throws list at 1,189 after Sunday’s game.

Nneka Ogwumike tied Taj McWilliams-Franklin (580 career steals) for 12th on the WNBA’s all-time steals list at 580 after Sunday.

Tonight’s game is just the fifth time in WNBA history that three players have recorded at least 10 points and 13 rebounds (Reese, Ogwumike, Reese).

The Sky head back home to take on the Dream on Wednesday, July 10. Chicago is 1-1 this season against Atlanta after defeating the Dream in the first game of this current road trip.

In the first matchup between the two teams this season, the Sky lost 80-89 on June 8 at home. Tina Charles led the Dream in scoring with 22 points while Rhyne Howard recorded a 10-point, 10-assist double-double. Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso and Dana Evans each led the Sky in scoring with 13 points apiece in the loss.

The Sky then defeated the Dream 85-77 on the road on July 2. Chennedy Carter scored a then-season-high 26 points while Reese pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds to help lift the Sky to victory. Evans also recorded 14 points off the bench. Charles and Allisha Gray each scored 19 points for the Dream.

The third matchup between the two teams tips off at 11 a.m. CST on Wednesday, July 10. Marquee Sports Network will carry the game locally. Chicago is 36-25 against Atlanta all time.
