Miami Hurricanes 2024 Football Season Preview: Anticipating Mario Cristobal’s Strongest Season Yet

This college football season is poised to be one of the most transformative in history, marked by new rules, conference realignments, and the much-anticipated expansion of the college football playoffs.

Reflecting on the past, the 2001 Hurricanes football team, regarded as one of the best assembled, competed in the Big East Conference. It is important to note that few current Hurricanes players were alive then.

It has been two decades of challenges since the Hurricanes transitioned to the ACC in 2004, joining their rival Florida State. From 1983 to 2003, the Miami program achieved ten or more wins 14 times. In the 20 years since joining the ACC, however, they have recorded only one ten-win season and one appearance in the ACC Championship – both accomplished in 2017. This success was partly due to a lighter schedule until faced with a significant reality check in the ACC Championship against Clemson and a substantial loss to Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl.

There was considerable pressure for Larry Coker to step down after three seasons that yielded a 9-3 record and a disappointing 7-6 finish in 2006. Despite these challenges, he still maintains two of the program’s six seasons with nine or more wins since joining the ACC.

Randy Shannon could not revive the team’s former glory, and Al Golden faced similar struggles. While Mark Richt had some level of success during his three seasons, Manny Diaz encountered difficulties, and currently, Mario Cristobal holds a record of 12-13 over his first two seasons.

The introduction of the turnover chain in 2017 significantly changed the college sports landscape. However, it was retired after a challenging 2021 season and a transition to a new head coach, Cristobal.

As we look towards this year’s Miami team, there is reason for optimism. The talent pool appears strong, and last season’s performance suggests an ability to exceed the previous year’s 7-6 record. Coach Cristobal possesses the skills to motivate players and organize effective game strategies.

While the peak era of the early 2000s may not be replicated, Miami is expected to regain its competitive stature.

The offensive line is set to perform exceptionally well again, with Cristobal’s background in offensive line training evident in their strong pass protection and impressive rushing statistics.

While a few key players have departed, Jalen Rivers stands out as a seasoned left tackle, and Indiana’s Zach Carpenter is set to fill the center position. The team upgraded their running back corps, bringing in Oregon State’s Damien Martinez, who has impressive stats, alongside veteran Mark Fletcher.

The quarterback situation has improved as well. Although Tyler Van Dyke had a solid performance, he has now transitioned to Wisconsin. Cam Ward from Washington State, recognized as a top transfer portal prospect, brings with him the ability to make quick decisions and excel in rhythm.

Returning players such as Xavier Restrepo, who led the team with 85 receptions, and Jacolby George, who averaged over 15 yards per catch, will bolster the team’s offensive capabilities.

Defensively, the pass rush is anticipated to remain strong, and while the run defense is robust, there is a need for improved overall performance after allowing 27 points or more in five games last season. Rueben Bain emerged as a key defensive player with impressive statistics, while the addition of Tyler Baron and Simeon Barrow is expected to enhance inside pressure.

Notably, Francisco Mauigoa is among the nation’s top linebackers, showcasing impressive tackle numbers. The secondary will also see reinforcements through the transfer portal, addressing the loss of key players.

One critical aspect of the Hurricanes’ success this season will be minimizing turnovers. Last season, the team struggled with 22 turnovers, significantly impacting their performance. Since mid-2017, the Hurricanes have not won any games when committing three or more turnovers.

With a more favorable schedule that avoids Clemson and omits North Carolina and NC State, the path appears manageable. A challenging trip to California will be followed by a week off, which should prepare the team well for pivotal matchups against Louisville and Florida State.

Overall, the upcoming season holds promise. The Hurricanes are expected to achieve their best record since 2017, targeting ten wins.
