Georgia Bulldogs 2024 Football Season Preview: Go Dawgs!

I recently attended the Orange Bowl, witnessing the Georgia Bulldogs win significantly over the Florida State Seminoles.

This experience reaffirmed my belief that the Bulldogs are a formidable College Football Playoff contender despite having one loss. The current playoff format would allow them to be in the competition this season.

This season, college football’s landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation, characterized by new regulations, conference realignments, and the eagerly awaited expansion of the college football playoffs.

Although Nick Saban has retired from coaching at Alabama, he continues to be involved with the program amidst speculation regarding his ability to thrive in the current NIL landscape. In contrast, Georgia’s head coach, Kirby Smart, has indicated that he does not face cultural challenges within his program, and in this evolving NIL era, he is arguably positioning himself as the premier coach in college football.

The Bulldogs have demonstrated impressive success, achieving a record of 42-2 with two national championships over the past three years. With the expanded College Football Playoffs, expectations will be significantly higher for them as they adapt to this new format.

2024 Florida Gators Football Preview: Noting the Challenging Schedule Ahead

It is notable that Georgia has lost eight players to the 2024 NFL Draft, a figure that pales in comparison to the ten players lost in 2023 and 15 in 2022.

Carson Beck has emerged as an elite quarterback. With the majority of the offensive line returning, which many consider to be the best in the nation, the team has an abundance of skilled players and depth ready to support any necessary transitions.

Georgia concluded the previous season ranked fifth in the nation in both total and scoring offense, fifth in passing efficiency, first in third down conversions, second in first downs (behind Oregon), and first in the SEC in time of possession.

The offense did encounter some challenges, particularly against Auburn and Missouri, and recorded a season-low 321 yards in their sole loss to Alabama.

However, the upcoming season’s offense is anticipated to be significantly more potent. Four exceptional starters return on the offensive line: tackles Earnest Greene and Xavier Truss, guards Dylan Fairchild and Tate Ratledge, and Jared Wilson, who is poised to emerge as a standout in the center position.

While Brock Bowers has taken the opportunity to play in the NFL, Georgia possesses considerable talent at tight end with Oscar Delp, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound player who caught 24 passes, and Stanford transfer Ben Yurosek, who has a proven track record with 108 receptions for 1,342 yards and five touchdowns over three years at Stanford.

The defense returns nearly all key players along with a wealth of capable backups, and the kicking game remains reliable.

Expectations for the Georgia defense are high, particularly following their impressive performance last season. They finished ninth in total defense nationally, first in the SEC, fifth in scoring defense, and first in third-down defense—accomplished without a formidable pass rush.

Georgia ranked 12th in the SEC for tackles for loss and averaged just over two sacks per game, yet this did not significantly impact their overall performance.

Despite the remarkable talent on the 2023 Georgia defense, the front six remains largely intact, with only defensive tackle Zion Logue departing for the NFL Draft.

The front three is expected to advance to professional opportunities next season, beginning with Mykel Williams, who is projected to be a top draft pick. At 6 feet 5 inches and 265 pounds, he led the team’s pass rush as a true hybrid player.

Georgia remains robust in terms of linebacker depth. Although Jason Dumas-Johnson has transferred to Kentucky, CJ Allen is emerging as a potential star after a standout freshman season with 41 tackles. Georgia is prepared to rotate players, but Allen is likely to excel following his partnership with Dumas-Johnson.

This Georgia team is well-equipped to handle the upcoming schedule.

Overall, Georgia appears to have a noticeable edge over most competitors, and I anticipate they will thrive in weekly matchups, leading to another SEC Championship appearance. This time, I expect them to secure a position in the College Football Playoff as the frontrunner for the national title.

I propose setting Georgia’s win total target at 11 victories.
