Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2024 Season Outlook

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently the most recent team to secure a Super Bowl victory in the state of Florida.

Buccaneers were the first franchise to win a Super Bowl while hosting at their home stadium.

During Super Bowl LV, which took place in the 2020 season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Tom Brady played a pivotal role in the team’s success. However, he is no longer part of the Buccaneers roster as they head into the 2024 season.

The 2024 Buccaneers present a significantly different roster from the one that achieved their last championship title, yet they remain competitive in the playoff race. Last season, they won their division and achieved a significant victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, winning 32-9 during the Wild Card weekend.

Despite last season’s surprising performance, the Buccaneers have the opportunity to build on that momentum moving forward.

For Offensive Coordinator Liam Coen and the Buccaneers’ rushing attack, there is substantial room for improvement in 2024. The team recorded the fewest rushing yards in the league (1,509) and ranked second-lowest in yards per designed rush (3.5) during the 2023 season.

The Buccaneers’ ground game is eagerly anticipated to be a key strength. After averaging 3.3 yards per carry in 2023, their 4.4 yards per carry in preseason ranks tied for fourth best in the NFL. The team has made strategic investments in their offensive line, including a first-round draft pick on new starting center Graham Barton, a fourth-round selection for running back Bucky Irving, and a sixth-round pick for guard Elijah Klein. Additionally, the signing of left guard Ben Bredeson during free agency enhances their blocking scheme, allowing the team to better exploit running lanes.

Wide receiver Mike Evans continues to demonstrate his value in the NFL. Jalen McMillan is expected to start the season as the Buccaneers’ No. 3 receiver, where he can capitalize on opportunities from both slot and perimeter positions. McMillan possesses playmaking abilities that allow him to stretch the field, create opportunities in space, and transform short passes into considerable gains, aligning well with quarterback Baker Mayfield’s aggressive passing approach.

The defensive lineup is moderately a concern due to the introduction of several new players. The Buccaneers have parted ways with outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett, inside linebacker Devin White, and cornerback Carlton Davis III. Questions remain about their ability to adequately fill these key positions. Although they drafted edge rusher Chris Braswell in the second round, he is not expected to start, with the unproven Joe Tryon-Shoyinka taking that role. The team is also relying on Zyon McCollum to start at cornerback, which raises concerns about depth.

Given the current circumstances, I anticipate the Buccaneers may secure eight or fewer wins in the upcoming season. I have concerns regarding the change in offensive coordinator, with Dave Canales having moved to Carolina, as well as the state of the interior offensive line. As a result, I am cautious about placing too much faith in Mayfield, despite his improved performance last season, as he faced significant challenges in the two previous seasons.
