Philadelphia Eagles Prevent Kansas City Chiefs from Achieving Super Bowl Three-Peat: Recap, In-Depth Analysis, and Reactions from Players and Coaches

New Orleans, LA – This is a friendly reminder that the Kansas City Chiefs were favored to win Super Bowl LIX to secure a historic third consecutive championship in the Super Bowl Era. However, the Philadelphia Eagles had other intentions and were determined to get revenge.

The Eagles successfully achieved that objective.

Fly Eagles Fly was in full effect.  Cooper DeJean, Josh Sweat, and the Philadelphia Eagles’ ferocious defense denied Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs a Super Bowl three-peat after a dominating 40-22 win in Super Bowl LIX.

This marks the Philadelphia Eagles’ second Super Bowl victory in the franchise’s history.

Jalen Hurts named Super Bowl MVP

Jalen Hurts demonstrated outstanding performance by throwing for two touchdowns and scoring another on a tush push, earning him the Super Bowl MVP title. Additionally, Vic Fangio’s defense showcased remarkable dominance, resulting in minimal contributions required from Saquon Barkley.

“Still processing it, it has been a long journey, a journey of ups and downs highs and lows I have always stayed true to it in the end having this vision of being the best I can be,” Hurts said. “That evolved overtime into this desire and this flame inside to win, you don’t do great things without the guys around you.”

Hurts is the first player to achieve five rushing touchdowns and five passing touchdowns in a single postseason.

Barkley achieved 57 rushing yards, surpassing Terrell Davis’ record for total rushing yards in a season, including playoffs. Additionally, Hurts passed for a total of 221 yards.

“It (Vince Lombardi trophy) is better in person than it is in madden playing as a kid,” Barkley said. “It is everything you dream off I am just happy to hold it give it a kiss and be world champs.”

Barkley, the 2024 AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year, recorded only 31 rushing yards in the first half, during which Philadelphia established a 24-0 lead.

Super Bowl LIX rematch brings heightened expectations for the Philadelphia Eagles

Barkley concluded the season, including playoffs, with a total of 2,504 rushing yards, marking the highest amount in NFL history.

Dejean recorded his first career interception, which resulted in a pick-six, during the Super Bowl. He also became the first player to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl on their birthday he turned 22.

With Donald Trump marking a historic moment as the first president in office to attend a Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Eagles demonstrated superior performance against the Kansas City Chiefs in all aspects of the game. The defending Super Bowl champions found themselves trailing 24-0 at halftime. It marks the second-largest halftime lead in Super Bowl history, the largest recorded since 1989. And were down 34-0 with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter.

“We knew we had a special team; we knew we had a group of guys that could do some special things,” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said. “It was going to take some day-to-day work. It was putting your head down and working and saying how are we going to put ourselves in the best position to win the next game.”

Sirianni achieved Super Bowl victory in his fourth season as head coach of the Eagles.

Even Taylor Swift’s attendance was not enough to assist the Chiefs, who experienced their first loss in 10 games this season. The pop superstar was in a suite observing her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, who did not make a reception until late in the third quarter.

Kelce concluded the game with 4 receptions totaling 39 yards, with his first reception occurring while the Chiefs trailed 27-0.

“Couldn’t get it going offensively they just got after us on all three phases,” Kelce said. “On top of that turnovers, penalties, playing behind the sticks on offense dropped passes, not taking advantage of the play calls and executing them. You don’t lose like that without everything going bad.”

Kelce will need to shake it off unless this was the last game of his career.

It is going to be a cruel summer for the Chiefs.

Mahomes has faced a 10-point deficit in all five of his Super Bowl appearances. The Chiefs successfully mounted comebacks to win three of those first four games; however, the outcome in Super Bowl LIX appeared unlikely.

“Anytime you lose a Super Bowl, it is the worst feeling in the world. It will stick with you the rest of your career,” Mahomes said. “These will be the two loses that will motivate me to be even better for the rest of my career because you only get so few of these and you have to capitalize on these, they hurt more than the wins feel good.”

The Eagles sacked Mahomes six times, the most of his career, including 2 1/2 by Sweat. And they did it without Fangio calling a single blitz.

Statistically, this was one of Patrick Mahomes’ less favorable performances of his career. He achieved an 11.4 Quarterback Rating (QBR) in Super Bowl LIX, marking the second-lowest QBR of his career. The only performance that ranked lower occurred in week seven of the 2021 season during a road game against the Tennessee Titans.

This marks Kansas City’s first playoff loss since the AFC Championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021.

The Chiefs faced a formidable opponent in this year’s Super Bowl, as they encountered an Eagles team that was larger, stronger, and faster, particularly at the line of scrimmage. This obvious advantage led to a significant deficit, with the Chiefs trailing by as many as 34 points. While their record indicates two losses this season, it is important to note that the final game against Denver does not reflect their true performance, as they opted to rest their starters. Ultimately, this results in a single loss for the season, which should not overshadow their overall achievements.

“They all hurt, you battled your tail off to get this far, it is very hard to do. We spend a lot of time doing this. It is not a hobby, we are in it the whole way,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “Spend a lot of hours doing it as players and coaches. So they are hurt when you get to this level. These things happen. Three peat aside, you get this far and don’t play as well as you want to it hurts.”

Reid has a record of 3 wins and 3 losses in Super Bowls as a head coach.

The Chiefs are the ninth team in Super Bowl history to attempt a three-peat; however, all previous teams have been unsuccessful in achieving this goal.

Moving forward, the evaluation of the Chiefs will predominantly focus on championships, and they must recognize the challenges ahead. To avoid repeating their Super Bowl experience against a superior team, General Manager Brett Veach will need to address key areas of improvement. This includes enhancing the offensive line, strengthening the cornerback position, and increasing depth on the defensive line. The Chiefs are poised to make a strong comeback.

The Eagles began the season with a record of 2-2 and subsequently achieved an impressive performance, winning 16 out of their last 17 games. This marks the highest number of victories in a 17-game span in the franchise’s history.

“We knew their weakness of the team was offensive line,” Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson said. “We heard all the noise about how we have to be able to stop them and contain the rush. Our defensive line won the game today.”

The Eagles effectively restricted the Chiefs to their own half of the field during each of the first nine offensive drives.

The Green Bay Packers are the only NFL team to secure three consecutive championships, achieving this feat in the years 1929-1931 and again from 1965-1967.

In terms of major American professional sports leagues, the last team to win three consecutive titles was the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA, who accomplished this from 2000 to 2002 under the leadership of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.

Under the leadership of head coach Nick Sirianni, there has been significant professional and emotional growth throughout the season. Initially, there were many who questioned his ability to lead a team with such talent to a championship-level performance. However, the offensive line has demonstrated its capability, the wide receivers have proven to be reliable, and the addition of Saquon Barkley, one of the most prominent free-agent acquisitions this offseason, has further enhanced the offensive prospects.

“It started with us, how we practice everyday we did not have no victory Mondays this year coach Sirianni took care of us at the end,” Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham said. And we took care of him. We were so focused these last couple of weeks.”

Defensively, the impact of Vic Fangio’s involvement has been noteworthy, and the team made commendable selections during the NFL draft, with Jalen Carter standing out as particularly impressive. As a result, everything has started to come together smoothly. Hurts has taken on considerable responsibility and earned the MVP award in recognition of his outstanding performance.

“The dogs upfront, we won with a four-man rush,” Eagles linebacker Zack Baun, who led the team with seven tackles and an interception, said.

The Eagles have set a franchise record with 18 wins this season, including playoff games.
