Super Bowl LIX rematch brings heightened expectations for the Philadelphia Eagles

The term “legacy” is frequently referenced in the world of sports. Super Bowl LIX carries substantial historical significance.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs aim to achieve a historic three-peat, a feat never accomplished in NFL history. For Jalen Hurts, the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles, this represents a unique opportunity for redemption. Among the last 19 quarterbacks to lose their Super Bowl debut, Hurts is the sole player to return to the championship game. Should the Eagles emerge victorious, Hurts would become the first quarterback to seize that second opportunity since Bob Griese in 1972.

Two years ago, Hurts achieved three rushing touchdowns and threw for 304 yards in the Super Bowl. However, Mahomes emerged victorious.

This rematch presents increased pressure for Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, who did not have the opportunity to face MVP candidate Saquon Barkley during Super Bowl LVII.

“After each week you talk about what you can do better and what you did well,” Eagles head coach Sirianni said. “That is a constant every Monday and what we did after 2022 as well. We have notes that we are going through, a couple of tweaks here and there of what we will do differently. And a couple that will stay the same. Anytime you go through a situation like that, you take notes like that, and you try to get better from each circumstance you go through.”

Sirianni is only the third head coach in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl twice within his first four seasons, alongside Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs (1982-83) and Mike Tomlin (2008 and 2010). On Sunday, he will be 43 years and 239 days old, making him the fifth-youngest coach to lead a team in a second Super Bowl.

The Dolphins make me cry, the offseason has commenced for the Miami Dolphins

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley has recorded 2,447 rushing yards this season, including 442 rushing yards in the postseason—marking the seventh-highest total in a single playoff run in NFL history. In Super Bowl LIX, Barkley can surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Davis, who holds the record for the most rushing yards in a season, including playoffs, with 2,476 rushing yards achieved in 1998 with the Denver Broncos. Additionally, Barkley could become only the third player in NFL history to accumulate 500 rushing yards in a single postseason, joining Hall of Famers John Riggins, who had 610 rushing yards in 1982 with the Washington Redskins, and Terrell Davis, who recorded 581 rushing yards in 1997 with the Denver Broncos.

Barkley is participating in his inaugural Super Bowl, which coincides with his 28th birthday.

“It is pretty cool the Super Bowl lands on my birthday,” Barkley said. “I don’t think winning the Super Bowl on your birthday, the day before or after, winning the Super Bowl in general is a cool moment. It puts you in football royalty, it is something you want to accomplish since you were a kid.”

The Eagles have achieved 39 rushing touchdowns this season, which includes 10 rushing touchdowns during the postseason. In Super Bowl LIX, they have the opportunity to exceed the record set by the 2022 Philadelphia Eagles, who recorded 42 rushing touchdowns (including playoffs), thus potentially establishing a new NFL record for the most rushing touchdowns by a team in history. Additionally, they could surpass the 1997 Denver Broncos, who hold the record for the most rushing touchdowns in a single postseason with 12.
