Jannik Sinner is on the cusp of trois

Jannik Sinner is poised to join one of the most prestigious groups in men’s tennis at the 2025 US Open.

If the Italian player successfully defends his title at the New York major, he will become only the seventh man in the Open Era to win three major titles in a single season, following his earlier victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. However, this achievement is not the only objective for the Italian during this tournament.

“At the moment, me and Carlos, we are sharing big trophies, but at the same time, things can change. You never know,” Sinner said. “There are great, great players out there, and the way to the final, it’s very difficult to get there. So let’s see if this continues. I always say we have to improve, because players, they understand us now, how we are.”

Jannik Sinner will be unable to defend his title at the Miami Open due to a suspension.

If Sinner does not succeed in his attempt to become the first player to win consecutive men’s singles titles at Flushing Meadows since Roger Federer in 2008, the opportunity will be available for Carlos Alcaraz to reclaim the No. 1 spot in the PIF ATP Rankings. Alcaraz only needs to match or surpass Sinner’s performance at the US Open to conclude his rival’s 14-month tenure at the top.

The prospects in New York appear promising for both Sinner and Alcaraz, who each reached finals at Roland Garros in June and Wimbledon in July, respectively, and have collectively secured the last seven Grand Slam titles. However, a competitive group comprising former US Open finalists Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz, along with four-time champion Novak Djokovic, remains a significant presence to consider.
