Please refrain from dismissing the Miami Dolphins at this time.
The Dolphins, with a record of 6-7, successfully rallied after facing deficits of 8 and 3 points in the fourth quarter, as well as competing against one of Aaron Rodgers’ strongest performances in recent years, to secure a victory over the New York Jets with a final score of 32-26.
Tua Tagovailoa secured the victory with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jonnu Smith during overtime, contributing to the Dolphins’ success in disrupting Aaron Rodgers’ first 300-yard passing game in nearly three years and extending their winning streak against the Jets in Miami to nine consecutive games.
“I would say what helped with that was our special teams, the return by Malik Washington,” Tagovailoa said. “Great job by him, great job by those guys on special teams, and they gave us an opportunity to go down and hopefully tie the game up so we could go into overtime. The mindset was just that, just get a field goal, get into field goal range for Jason to kick the ball, and there you go.”
Following Jason Sanders’ successful 42-yard field goal that equalized the score with 7 seconds remaining in regulation, Tagovailoa efficiently advanced the Dolphins down the field.
Anders Carlson provided the struggling Jets (3-10), who have been eliminated from postseason contention for the 14th consecutive year, with the lead by making a 42-yard field goal with 52 seconds left. In response, Malik Washington placed the Dolphins in an advantageous position to set up Sanders’ field goal with an impressive 45-yard kickoff return to Miami’s 46-yard line.
“We had some good stretches. I think we scored like the first five possessions. Got to be better in the red zone, we had a couple negative yards plays and false starts that hurt us, but I felt like we moved the ball pretty efficiently,” Rodgers said. “We obviously had the two three-and-outs and we’re back tied and put together a nice drive to get down there and take the lead. But again even on that drive, we had negative yards plays down there, at like the 25 or whatever, so disappointing.”
The Dolphins restricted New York to only 83 rushing yards, limiting opponents to under 100 yards on the ground for the sixth time this season.
“Getting back in the win column is huge,” Dolphins defensive tackle Calais Campbell said. “Staying alive in this hunt is huge. We have something to play for.”
Smith faced challenges during regulation but effectively redeemed himself with three impressive plays in overtime, culminating in the game-winning shot.
“Whenever my opps come, just capitalize off of them. We each individually got to have that mindset,” Smith said. “It may not be your day. Every week it’s the NFL, guys are good, and we’ve got so many talented guys on this team, so opps are precious. When it comes your time to make an opp, make it count. Make it count.”
Tagovailoa completed 33 of 47 pass attempts, achieving a completion rate of 70.2%, for a total of 331 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He maintains an impressive record of 5-0 as a starting quarterback and 6-0 in games played against the Jets. With his 5-0 record against the New York Jets and a perfect 7-0 record against New England, Tagovailoa stands out as the only active quarterback with a record of 5-0 or better against two opponents. Furthermore, with his performance totaling 331 yards, he became the fourth quarterback in the history of the Dolphins franchise to surpass 15,000 career passing yards.
“We’ve had a rough season. We have a lot of people paying a lot of money to come see us play, and Hard Rock Stadium is special to us,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said. “All of those things were really cool, and I was just really happy with what the team did and how they approached the week allowed them to have an opportunity to have a really cool football moment together today.”
In the NFL, a victory is significant regardless of the point spread or the expectations surrounding the game. This is particularly true when facing a seasoned quarterback like Aaron Rodgers. The Texans possess strong offensive skills and a formidable defense. To compete effectively, the Dolphins must perform like a playoff-caliber team. To enhance their chances of securing a wild card spot, the Dolphins will need to win all remaining games to reach ten victories.
The synergy between Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill during this game was remarkable. Tagovailoa consistently delivered accurate passes to Hill, who executed well-timed routes. This is when the Dolphins perform at their peak. With sufficient time in the pocket, Tagovailoa was able to locate Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Smith, who significantly impacted the game during overtime.
