Week 1 Recap of Unrivaled

A three-on-three basketball observational study.

The league features three-on-three basketball, but the full-court format creates a dynamic that resembles five-on-five play, characterized by a faster pace and greater open space. This allows players to take a variety of shots, as there is limited help defense, although they remain focused on their defensive assignments. The conditioning provided to the women prior to the start of the WNBA season through Unrivaled will be advantageous. Notably, I have not observed any signs of fatigue among the players during the opening weekend.

The heightened activity in the fourth quarter contributes significantly to the dynamic nature of the game. The winning score is determined by adding an additional 11 points to the total of the leading team after three quarters.

Unrivaled is here. Comprehensive insights, team evaluations, and my forecast for the league champion.

Skylar Diggins-Smith highlighted to the teams and women basketball enthusiasts the enjoyment of the game and demonstrated that veterans in Unrivaled can maintain a high level of performance during the offseason.

“In the W, you can literally go time score possession for certain things, in this league there is always a situation where the losing team can make a comeback,” Diggins-Smith said after Lunar Owls win over Rose BC.

The team I selected to win the season, Mist BC, has experienced a challenging start to my prediction. Currently, Mist holds a record of 0-2 following losses to Lunar Owls BC and Laces BC.It is still early. The Mist have demonstrated their potential to be significant contenders this season. A key aspect of their performance is their ability to create a challenging environment for their opponents. The league provides advantages for guards, and DiJonai Carrington will play a crucial role as it progresses.

The Lunar Owls, under the leadership of head coach DJ Sackmann, demonstrated impressive performance during the opening weekend and are expected to pose a competitive challenge each week. Their team is characterized by a blend of experience and youth, combined with a dynamic style of play that has already set the groundwork for their success after the first week. Diggins-Smith showcased exceptional performance during the opening week, while Napheesa Collier is expected to make significant contributions on offense and enhance the team’s defensive pressure.

The Phantom BC, Rose BC, and the Mist are currently 0-2. Each of these teams deserves the opportunity to make necessary adjustments, as they still have a strong chance of achieving overall success. Key players such as Breanna Stewart for the Mist, Satou Sabally for the Phantom, and Chelsea Gray for Rose BC are all highly competitive and will play crucial roles in their teams’ efforts to rebound.

“They take pride on the defensive side of the ball,” Vinyl head coach Teresa Weatherspoon said after their win over Phantom BC. “They enjoy playing defense, they enjoy the schemes that we put in place, and they understand the assignment and how important it is.”

The Laces and Vinyl are the two remaining undefeated teams. Dearica Hamby from the Vinyl has significant experience in 3×3 basketball, so it is not surprising that she adapted quickly to the enhanced spacing and fast pace of play. The Laces, led by Tiffany Hayes, demonstrate impressive balance on both ends of the court. Additionally, Kate Martin’s skills as a cutter, screener, and spot-up shooter will continue to develop positively as the season progresses.
