Lewis Hamilton is set to leave Mercedes at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season

There are unexpected developments, and the news is quite surprising. It is uncommon for both to co-occur.

Lewis Hamilton will depart from Mercedes at the conclusion of the 2024 Formula 1 season to join Ferrari in 2025. The British driver’s 12-year collaboration with Mercedes has been the most successful partnership in the history of Formula 1.

“An opportunity came up in the new year and I decided to take it,” Hamilton said. “It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make.”

Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes last winter took the team by surprise.

“I have had an amazing 11 years with this team, and I’m so proud of what we have achieved together,” Hamilton added. “Mercedes has been part of my life since I was 13 years old. It’s a place where I have grown up.”

After an impressive tenure of 12 years with 246 races, 84 victories, and six drivers’ championships, Lewis Hamilton will transition from Mercedes to Ferrari in 2025.

“But nothing is going to take away 12 incredible years with eight constructors’ and six drivers’ championships,” Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said in Qatar. “And that is what will be in the memory. After next Sunday, we’re going to look back at this great period of time rather than a season of races that were particularly bad. We will stay with the good memories.”

Mercedes will be promoting 18-year-old rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who shows great promise, as the replacement for the seven-time champion.

In July at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton achieved a remarkable victory at the British Grand Prix, marking his first win since the 2021 title loss in Abu Dhabi. He secured another victory in Belgium; however, this win occurred following the disqualification of teammate George Russell due to his car being underweight. This was likely Hamilton’s final victory with Mercedes.

When Hamilton joined the Mercedes factory team from McLaren in 2013, he brought one championship title and 21 victories.

Hamilton’s impressive career statistics highlight his exceptional achievements in Formula 1. Despite narrowly missing a record-breaking eighth world title in 2021, he has secured 105 victories (84 with Mercedes) and achieved 104 pole positions (78 with Mercedes), solidifying his status as the most successful driver in the history of the sport.

Hamilton leveraged his increasing prominence as a Formula 1 superstar to advocate for social justice, environmental issues, and the need for greater diversity within his sport.

In July 2021, he committed £20 million of his personal funds to establish a new charity, Mission 44, dedicated to assisting individuals from underrepresented backgrounds in pursuing careers in engineering. Additionally, he collaborated with Mercedes to launch a separate initiative, Ignite, aimed at enhancing diversity within a sport that has historically featured only one Black driver in its 75-year history.

“The time is right for me to take this step, and I’m excited to be taking on a new challenge,” Hamilton added. “I will be forever grateful for the incredible support of my Mercedes family, Especially Toto for his friendship and leadership and I want to finish on a high together.”

Hamilton will be 40 years old when he makes his debut in a red car, and it will probably require more than one season for all elements to align for a title challenge. He possesses the talent and fitness required to initiate a successful final chapter in his career; however, the longer he postpones this opportunity, the more challenging it may become to execute effectively.
