Women’s Seeds Begin Thursday; ATP Next Gen Rematch Highlights Night Session

The WTA second round will begin Thursday, which means the first day of play for seeded players. South Florida’s own Coco Gauff will face 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin while No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and defending champion Danielle Collins will also be in action. On the men’s side, the first round will conclude, and the final match to take the court will feature two rising stars as 18-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca takes on 19-year-old American Learner Tien. The two ended the 2024 season by playing in the ATP Next Gen Finals title match.

Looking Ahead

Here’s a preview of marquee matches to come over the next two days.
Friday Day (Session 7): Six-time champion Novak Djokovic returns for his first match here since 2019 while fellow Miami Open winners Iga Swiatek and Daniil Medvedev will also be in action.

Friday Night (Session 8): Carlos Alcaraz, the 2022 Miami Open champion, returns to Hard Rock Stadium, as does Australian Open champion Madison Keys, who has won 18 of her 20 matches this season.

Saturday Day (Session 9): The men’s top seed will take the court for the first time when Australian Open finalist Alexander Zverev makes his 2025 Miami debut while the WTA’s third round will get under way.
Saturday Night (Session 10): American Frances Tiafoe will get his Miami Open underway.

The schedule is subject to change.

Wednesday Wrap Up
The WTA first round concluded Wednesday, and the results set up some compelling second round matches, particularly in the bottom section of the draw. Three-time Miami Open winner Victoria Azarenka won to set up a match against No. 15 Karolina Muchova, while 2021 Olympic Gold medalist Belinda Bencic continues her great play after maternity leave with a three-set win Wednesday to set up a match against fellow mom Elina Svitolina, the No. 21 seed. Looming in that section is No. 2 and former Miami Open winner Iga Swiatek.

The ATP got main draw play underway with back-to-back three setters on Stadium Court. The oldest man in the draw, 38-year-old Gael Monfils outlasted Fabian Marozsan while Nick Kyrgios came from behind to defeat Mackenzie McDonald.
