Georgia Bulldogs defeat Mississippi State

Starkville, MS. — The fifth-ranked Georgia football team utilized a commanding second quarter to take control of the game against Mississippi State and ultimately secured a 41-21 victory Saturday afternoon at Davis Wade Stadium. Quarterback Gunner Stockton and running back Nate Frazier led an impressive offensive performance, with Stockton connecting on three touchdown passes and Frazier rushing for a career-high 181 yards.

After trailing 7-3 after the first quarter, Georgia (8-1, 6-1 SEC) scored 21 consecutive points in the second quarter to establish dominance and extend its winning streak over Mississippi State (5-5, 1-5) to six games. This marks the Bulldogs’ 47th consecutive win over an unranked opponent, the longest streak in the nation.

Georgia finished the game with a season-high 567 yards of total offense—264 passing and 303 rushing—while limiting Mississippi State to 322 yards. Stockton completed 18 of 29 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Frazier needed only 12 carries to reach 181 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 33-yard run in the fourth. Wide receiver Zachariah Branch led the receivers with eight catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, safety KJ Bolden led the Bulldogs with 10 tackles. Defensive back Joenel Aguero contributed seven tackles, while linebackers Raylen Wilson and CJ Allen each had six. Wilson also recorded 1.5 sacks.

Mississippi State (5-5, 1-5) opened the game with a 75-yard, 14-play drive that showcased efficient third-down conversions, culminating in quarterback Kamario Taylor’s 4-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead. Georgia responded with Peyton Woodring’s 49-yard field goal, reducing the deficit to 7-3 with 6:41 remaining in the first quarter. This drive was aided by a 36-yard pass from Stockton to wide receiver London Humphreys.

Georgia’s next possession reached the State 2-yard line but was unsuccessful after Dillon Bell was stripped, and Mississippi State recovered the fumble. The Bulldogs regained possession shortly afterward when linebacker Quintavius Johnson caused a fumble from quarterback Blake Shapen, which Bolden recovered at the State 27.

Following a one-yard loss on a screen pass and then a 24-yard reception from Stockton to tight end Elyiss Williams, running back Chauncey Bowens scored on a four-yard run to give Georgia a 10-7 lead with 14:04 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs extended their advantage to 17-7 when Stockton connected with tight end Oscar Delp on an eight-yard TD pass with 5:09 left on the clock. Earlier in the drive, Delp had a 29-yard catch to set up the scoring opportunity.

Defensively, Georgia made a key stand on fourth-and-5 at the UGA 23, regaining possession with 2:25 left in the half. The Bulldogs then drove 77 yards in nine plays, capped by a 19-yard touchdown run from Branch after Stockton’s screen pass on third-and-2 set up the play. This gave Georgia a 24-7 lead at halftime.

The second half began with Georgia quickly increasing its lead. On second-and-7 at the UGA 41, Frazier broke free for a 59-yard touchdown run, pushing the score to 31-7 with 9:58 remaining in the third quarter. This run marked Frazier’s first 100-yard rushing game of the season and the second of his career.

Continuing its offensive surge, Georgia extended its lead through the air as Stockton found Noah Thomas near midfield, and Thomas took it the rest of the way for a 64-yard touchdown, making the score 38-7 with 9:58 left in the third.

After extensive scoring runs by Georgia, Mississippi State scored on a one-yard touchdown run by Taylor with 4:49 remaining, closing the gap to 38-14. Georgia responded with a 46-yard field goal by Woodring, increasing the lead to 41-14 with 12:03 remaining. Taylor added his third rushing touchdown from two yards out with 4:47 left, bringing the final score to 41-21.

Georgia returns to Sanford Stadium next Saturday night to face No. 11 Texas. The Bulldogs defeated the Longhorns twice in 2024, once in Austin and again in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.
