Coco Gauff survives at Miami Open with hometown support

Down but never out.

Coco Gauff, the 18-year-old hometown favorite, rallied from deficits in both sets of her round three victory over Zhang Shuai 7-6, 7-5 at the Miami Open.

It was a roller coaster of two sets. Gauff saved two set points in the opener as Zhang served at 5-3; she won five of the last six games from 4-2 down.

Miami Open is off to energetic start, Naomi Osaka taking her talents to third round

“I am eager to do better; the hometown crowd helped with motivation,” Gauff said. “I am trusting my instincts more.”

Gauff is through to the last 16 without losing a set in just her third visit to the Miami Open. In her first two visits, she was beaten in round two.

A vast potential test could await Gauff next with a possible match versus No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek.

In the meantime, Coco is excited to follow March Madness games and Oscar night. Fingers crossed for King Richard for best picture.
