The Dolphins make me cry, Miami Dolphins 2024 Season Preview: Anticipating Success in the Playoffs

The Miami Dolphins have experienced a notably active off-season.

Several players were released and found new teams, while contract extensions were negotiated thoughtfully, notably for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins and Tagovailoa agreed on a four-year, $212.4 million extension, marking the largest contract in franchise history.

Miami stands out as the only team in the NFL with three offensive skill players receiving at least $70 million in guaranteed money, which includes wide receivers Tyreek Hill ($72.2 million) and Jaylen Waddle ($71.6 million). Their combined total of $310.8 million in guaranteed money ranks as the third-highest for any trio of offensive skill players (QB, RB, WR, TE).

Head coach Mike McDaniel’s play calling, combined with a wealth of offensive talent, remains a significant strength for the team. The trio of Tua Tagovailoa, who led the NFL in passing yards, Tyreek Hill, who topped receiving yards, and Raheem Mostert, who led in rushing touchdowns, performed exceptionally well in 2023. They are all returning, along with WR Jaylen Waddle, RB De’Von Achane, and five players who started multiple games for the Dolphins last season. With the continuity of the offensive coaching staff and the addition of new players such as RB Jaylen Wright, TE Jonnu Smith, and WR Odell Beckham Jr., Miami has the potential to lead the league in offensive performance once again.

However, the offensive line remains a concern. The issues with Miami’s offensive line extend back to Tagovailoa’s rookie year in 2020. Since then, the Dolphins have recorded a pass block win rate of 51%, which is the second lowest in the NFL, just ahead of the Bengals (50%). In 2023, Miami’s pass block win rate dropped to 49%, again ranking second worst, only surpassing the Patriots (44%).

Maintaining the health of the offensive line is paramount. While many of the same players are returning from last season, this unit has been plagued by injuries over the past two years. Terron Armstead is recognized as one of the league’s premier tackles when healthy; however, he missed seven games last season and four in 2022. New center Aaron Brewer is currently managing an injury sustained during training camp, and left guard Isaiah Wynn has been sidelined since suffering a quadriceps injury in Week 7 of last season. The Dolphins’ ability to keep their offensive line healthy will be a key factor in their performance this season.

The Dolphins maintain vital offensive players and a skilled head coach directing the offensive strategy. They are positioned to win ten games, secure a playoff victory to break their ongoing drought, and potentially reach the AFC Championship Game. Additionally, if the team can benefit from a full season with cornerback Jalen Ramsey and edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, it will greatly enhance the strength of their defense.
