This is the first game, but it was a disappointing start to the Miami Dolphins’ season.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones contributed to ending the team’s 11-game losing streak on opening day, the longest active streak in the NFL. He now aims to demonstrate the ability to replicate that performance.
Jones contributed two rushing touchdowns, passed for an additional touchdown, and led the Colts to a 33-8 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, marking their first 1-0 start since 2013.
“I think we played well as a team. It’s a good start. I think we feel good about the start,” Jones said. “But I think everyone on our team is mature enough to know we have to continue to grow and improve, and I think that’s the mindset of our team now.”

Jones performed exceptionally well in his first significant game since securing the starting position over Anthony Richardson nearly three weeks ago. He completed 22 of 29 pass attempts for 272 yards, including a career-high 197 yards in the first half. Additionally, he scored two rushing touchdowns from the 1-yard line, demonstrated strong decision-making at the line of scrimmage, and maintained a mistake-free performance with no turnovers and only one sack taken.
During the first half, the Dolphins accumulated a total of 43 yards, while the Colts executed 43 plays. Miami finished the game with a total of 211 yards. Late in the game, De’Von Achane made a notable play on a screen pass on fourth-and-goal from the Colts’ 11-yard line with 6:21 remaining, which prevented the Dolphins from suffering their first shutout in four years. A successful two-point conversion pass afterward increased the score to 30-8.
Tua Tagovailoa completed 14 of 23 pass attempts for 114 yards, with two interceptions and one fumble secured during one of his three sacks. The Dolphins’ rushing attack totalled 78 yards, while wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle combined for eight receptions and 70 yards.
“This was a big kick in the balls,” Hill said. “Next week we will be better.”
Tagovailoa is capable of performing at an even higher level. He has had a talented career with the Dolphins up to this point. Today’s performance, including the interceptions, was uncharacteristic. The Dolphins need to focus on effective attack strategies, protect him, and provide him with sufficient time to target downfield opportunities. The team’s strength lies in its speed, with players such as Hill, Waddle, and Achane. We need to see more explosive plays and big gains moving forward, as that is where our team excels.
“This was a lack of a lot of things,” Tagovailoa said. “I can speak more so on the offensive side, as we were trying to get this started and rolling, that is not how you start the game. We do not want to overreact we do not want to under react to this instead get this right so it doesn’t happen again.”
Please note that this performance does not reflect the team’s usual level of play throughout the season. The Dolphins players are disappointed with their recent game but remain optimistic about improving in next week’s home opener against New England. It is a long season, and while this was not the debut they anticipated, it is important to keep the situation in perspective.
