Florida Atlantic University Owls 2026 Football Season Preview

The college football team in Boca Raton remains there.

Howard Schnellenberger, a legendary figure, initiated the program and achieved a 9-3 record in its inaugural 2004 season. Since then, the Owls have recorded only five winning seasons over the past 21 years.

Lane Kiffin demonstrated that success is achievable at FAU, and current head coach Zach Kittley seems prepared to position the team as a prominent competitor in the American Athletic Conference.

Kittley, known for his role as offensive coordinator for the high-performing Houston Baptist program, as well as at Western Kentucky and Texas Tech, will be just 35 years old at the start of the upcoming season. He has the players, offensive system, and schedule in place to potentially achieve the program’s first winning season since 2020.

The primary goal of hiring Zach Kittley was to significantly boost offensive production, increase scoring, and elevate the Florida Atlantic team’s overall performance to be one of the most exciting in college football.

There were challenges on the offensive side; however, the Owls ranked 98th nationally in rushing and 56th overall in 2024. In Kittley’s first year, the team ranked 22nd in total yards and was first in passing, significantly ahead of the competition. North Texas, known for its high-powered offense, finished second nationally with 318 passing yards per game, while Florida Atlantic averaged 340.2 yards per game.

Quarterback Caden Veltkamp totaled 3,641 passing yards and 24 touchdowns. Easton Messer led the team with a league-high 104 receptions for over 1,000 yards. Additionally, several talented receivers have transferred in through the portal, eager to contribute to the team’s success.

The offense focused on speed, passing attack, and tempo. When the ground game was able to produce a successful play, FAU succeeded. The team recorded a 4-3 record when averaging over 2.7 yards per carry, and a 0-5 record when the ground game was less effective.

Florida Atlantic University recorded a total of 20 interceptions and 29 turnovers, both the highest in the nation. UTEP also had 20 interceptions; however, no other team committed more than 17 turnovers.

All tasks related to the Owls need to be completed with greater precision and quality.

Kittley is an emerging head coach who is still gaining experience, but his offensive strategies are highly effective. He has a roster of veteran players and overall strong team components that position him for future success.

FAU prediction 7-5.
