Jannik Sinner Secures Year-End No. 1 Position in PIF ATP Rankings

SHANGHAI, CN – Jannik Sinner has secured the ATP Year-End No. 1 title presented by PIF, making history as the first Italian player to achieve this honor, following his victory in the semi-finals at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

On June 10, Sinner made history by becoming the first male or female athlete from his country to achieve the World No. 1 ranking in singles since the inception of computerized rankings in 1973. He has maintained this position and will continue to hold it at least until the conclusion of the season.

“It’s amazing. It’s something you dream of when you are a kid, when you are young, just to reach the No. 1. Now having the year-end, it’s also a different and special feeling,” Sinner said. “It means so much to me, obviously. This is something I could not accomplish without all the people I have around — the family and friends and also a big credit to my team.”

The 23-year-old athlete is the 19th individual to achieve the title of year-end World No. 1 and is only the fourth active player to do so, joining the ranks of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner commenced his season with a victory at the Australian Open and has maintained a strong performance throughout. Following a competitive contest with Alcaraz for the year-end No. 1 ranking, he has distinguished himself by securing this prestigious accolade. He has achieved a tour-leading six titles, which include his inaugural major victories at the Australian Open and the US Open. He is now poised to compete for his seventh title of 2024 this Sunday in the final of the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

By achieving victory in both Melbourne and New York, Sinner has distinguished himself as only the third male athlete in the Open Era to secure his first two Grand Slam titles in a single season. He is the first to accomplish this since Guillermo Vilas in 1977.

Sinner commenced the season with positive momentum following his appearance in the championship match at the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals and his contribution to Italy’s success in the Davis Cup. Starting 2024 ranked as World No. 4, he made a remarkable comeback from a two-set deficit against Daniil Medvedev in the final at Melbourne Park, becoming only the second Italian male player to achieve Grand Slam success in the Open Era, following Adriano Panatta’s victory at the 1976 Roland Garros.

Sinner achieved an impressive milestone by winning his first 16 matches of the year, bringing his season record to 64 wins and 6 losses. At just 23 years old, he has equaled his personal best in total wins from the previous year, during which he set the record for the most victories by a male player from his country in a single season in the Open Era.

The San Candido native began the year with one ATP Masters 1000 title and has since secured two additional titles, achieving victories in Miami and Cincinnati. He also won championships at ATP 500 events in Rotterdam and Halle.

By increasing his major title count at the US Open, Sinner has joined an exclusive group of four players who have won both the Australian Open and the US Open on hard courts in the same season. The other three players are Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Mats Wilander.
