Angel Reese’s impressive rookie season with the Chicago Sky has concluded due to a wrist injury sustained during Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks.
“What a year,” Reese posted on social media Saturday. “I never would have imagined the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they will be seeing more of in Year 2 lol.
Reese, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft and a star national champion from LSU, made a significant impact in her inaugural season. She recorded 26 double-doubles, the second highest in WNBA history for a single season, and set a league record earlier this summer with 15 consecutive double-doubles.
“I’m filled with emotions right now that I have a season ending injury, but also filled with so much gratitude for what is next. Although this is God’s timing and not mine, I am finally able to give myself a physical and mental break. ‘God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers.'”
Her exceptional performance earned her an All-Star selection, marking a notable milestone as she and Caitlin Clark, her college rival and main contender for the Rookie of the Year award, became the first pair of rookies to receive All-Star honors since 2014. Reese is also recognized as Chicago’s fourth rookie All-Star and the first since 2013.
Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese underwent successful surgery on a fractured left wrist and is taking steps towards a heathy recovery, the team announced today. She is expected to start rehabilitation in the coming weeks.
Throughout the season, Reese averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game.
