Carlos Alcaraz has successfully defended his Wimbledon title, securing another prestigious trophy to his name.
“It is a huge honour for me to be part of those players who have achieved Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year,” said the 21-year-old. “They are huge champions. I don’t consider myself as a champion yet, not like them, but I will keep going to build my path, my journey. It is a huge honour for me.”
In a remarkable championship match against Novak Djokovic at the All England Club on Sunday, Alcaraz showcased exceptional skill and composure, capturing his second consecutive major title. Following his first Grand Slam victory at Roland Garros just five weeks prior, Alcaraz seized control of the match early on Centre Court, demonstrating a significantly different performance compared to their five-set encounter earlier this year.
With a final score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4), Alcaraz has joined the ranks of ATP legends, including Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic, as one of the few men to win both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same calendar year.
“At the end of my career, I want to sit at the same table as the big guys,” he said. “That’s my main goal. That’s my dream right now. It doesn’t matter if I already won four Grand Slams at the age of 21. If I don’t keep going, all these tournaments for me, it doesn’t matter.”
Alcaraz has now achieved the remarkable feat of becoming a four-time major champion at a young age, having participated in fewer Grand Slam matches than the legendary trio of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. However, the Spaniard remains motivated and is not inclined to become complacent.
