Carlos Alcaraz has achieved another significant milestone in his burgeoning career.
The 21-year-old Spaniard emerged victorious against Alexander Zverev in a challenging championship match at Roland Garros, lasting four hours and 19 minutes, thereby securing his first title at this prestigious clay-court event. This victory marks the third consecutive year in which Alcaraz has claimed a Grand Slam title, following his successes at the 2022 US Open and the 2023 Wimbledon.
“Winning a Grand Slam is always special,” said Alcaraz in his post-match press conference after his 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win. “Winning your first in every Grand Slam is always super special. But in Roland Garros, knowing all the Spanish players who have won this tournament and being able to put my name on that amazing list is something unbelievable.”
Carlos Alcaraz, becomes youngest Miami Open champion and first from Spain
With his recent victory in Paris, Alcaraz has distinguished himself as the youngest player to win a major title on all three surfaces: clay, hard, and grass.
“Congratulations Carlos. Third Grand Slam, 21 years old. It’s incredible,” said Zverev to Alcaraz at the trophy ceremony. “You won three different ones. You’re already a Hall of Famer and you’re only 21 years old.”
With Jannik Sinner’s success at the Australian Open and Carlos Alcaraz securing the first two major titles of 2024, the emerging stars of the ATP Tour have demonstrated their aspirations to compete against their more experienced counterparts at the pinnacle of the sport. This trend is further indicated in the PIF ATP Rankings, where Alcaraz currently holds the No. 2 position, while Sinner has made history as the first Italian player to attain the World No. 1 ranking as of Monday.
